In recent years there has been an explosion of research in brain science which helps us understand better how medications can enable individuals to cope with difficulties with mood, anxiety, and attention (“psychopharmacology”). Although many psychological problems and personal stressors can be treated well with psychotherapy only, in some cases a combined treatment with psychotherapy plus psychopharmacology is significantly more effective than either therapy or medication alone. Because medications can affect each person differently, psychopharmacologists are skilled in selecting and monitoring individualized medication regimens based on your needs and your individual responses to treatment.
Follow-up visits for medication treatment are 20-30 minutes in duration. Patients are usually seen monthly while we are adjusting medications. Once the doses of medications are stable, these visits may be spaced out to every three months. During treatment, we will work closely with your primary care physician and/or therapist so that care is well-integrated.
